Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors are granted the right to question particular rulings from the chair umpire, following the practice currently in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step follows just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
